Email with Password Protected Files

Symptoms:

An exception email is received indicating that SmartUi Extract is unable to process the attached invoice. The attachment appears to be a standard PDF file.


Reason:

SmartUi Extract is a powerful tool designed to efficiently process and manage documents. However, it encounters issues when handling PDF files with certain restrictions, especially those that are password-protected or have limitations on content copying and page extraction. In such cases, SmartUi Extract is unable to successfully process the document. Below, we explore the reasons behind this issue and potential causes. 


SmartUi Requirements for PDF Processing

For SmartUi to successfully process a PDF, specific permissions must be enabled. The system requires the following abilities: 

  1. Extract pages from the document.
  2. Copy content, either for standard purposes or for accessibility reasons.

SmartUi will not be able to process a PDF if it has any of the following restrictions: 

  • Content Copying and Content Copying for Accessibility are set to Not Allowed.
  • Content Copying and Page Extraction are set to Not Allowed.
  • Content Copying for Accessibility and Page Extraction are set to Not Allowed.


If any combination of these restrictions exists, SmartUi will flag the file as restricted and will not be able to process it.
